Online poker: The French operators ask for help from the authorities
The operators of online poker in France are more and more conscious of the decline of the market. Face to their anxiety, the operators members of the federation Le Geste, namely Betclic, Pokerstars, la Française des jeux and Barrière called for the help from the authorities by sending a note to the Ministry of economy and finance. They think that a drop of the activity by more than 20% is to be planned for next year if any action is undertaken. In fact, it is necessary to say that the facts are eloquent, if we quote only the closure of about ten poker room, including the one of the Partouche group, which is effective from this Monday June 17th 2013, the fall of income by 13% observed during the first trimester of this year, or the decrease of the number of participations in organized tournaments. According to a professional, it is required to wait at least ten minutes to gather the necessary field.
The very heavy tax system and the French rules which force the operators to limit the kinds of poker variants accessible for players, are among the factors having caused this drop of activity. According to Le Geste, professional players decided to play poker on foreign platforms because of strict recovery plans that the tax administration imposed to them. Currently, the authorities whose Bercy and Arjel (Autorité de régulation des jeux en ligne) members examine the possibility to make the access to new variants of poker effective, in order to attract players. However, the decree takes time to be born. The setting of the common liquidity with other European markets is also considered.
