Belgium: Casinos will become non-smoking area from July 1
Recently, the Belgian Constitutional Court took the decision that from the second half of this year 2011, all public places are declared "non-smoking areas." Previously, from December 2009 until this decision, this measure wasn't yet applied to some locations such as cafes without fresh food service and gambling rooms, poker room or casino. To avoid the concept of giving more advantages for some shopkeeper, the Belgian Constitutional Court corrected its decision by establishing the principles of equality. Consequently, many smokers of various types of institutions including casinos, poker players included, must leave the place or at least move to the areas reserved for smoking.
This decision of the Constitutional Court in Belgium is not without direct consequence on gambling operators and poker room owners but mostly on players who frequent casinos. What is certain is that this new measure will have a significant impact on attendance rates of those places, as that was the case during the adoption of this law in France. Nevertheless, there is always another alternative like what, casino owners can always create a special space for players who smoke. However, the ban of smoking in casinos in Belgium can be viewed in a positive way, that of helping individuals who simultaneously smoke while playing to choose between the two. In any case, there are still a few months for players to adapt in this new regulations, unless the wisest decision is to take the habit of playing without smoking.
