London's Meridian Hotel will host the 2005 Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC Europe), between August 30th and September 1st. Aside from filling the poker tables, the World Series of Poker attracted gamblers of every sort to the Rio, the WSOP's host casino. During the six weeks that the WSOP convened at the Rio, "game usage" a gauge of efficiency based partially on the ratio of games played, demonstrated that the casino benefited from the WSOP, and not just for poker. Isolating poker games, the general game usage grew 12% between June 2 and July 15. More specifically, game usage for table games, other than poker, increased by 29 percent during that period. UK betting and gaming company William Hill announced the company's official foray into major tournament poker, with its forthcoming 'William Hill Grand Prix' poker tournament. The 'William Hill Grand Prix' will boast a prize pool of at least £450,000 ($777,671), including a top prize of £150,000 ($259,240).

SkyCity Adelaide, a casino in South Australia, is reintroducing poker following a four year hiatus from the game. Citing waning popularity as the motivation for shutting out poker games in 2001, the casino has rethought this move after poker's worldwide renaissance over the past couple of years.

Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel, the traditional home of the World Series of Poker, is trying to reclaim its standing in the world of poker, since the WSOP was bought up by Harrah's in 2004. All World Poker Supplies, the poker retail division of Denver-based GetStuffNow.net, announced the availability of new full-sized hold'em poker tables. The sole investor known to be associated with the bid is professional poker player Doyle Brunson. The other investors allegedly involved in the bid remained anonymous and no terms, aside from price, were released regarding the bid.

The 5,619 players originally registered to play in the WSOP main event have, since its start, been whittled down to a mere 27 left standing after round five. 'On the Felt,' as the program has been coined, will broadcast live from the World Series of Poker Lifestyle Show at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino. WSOP fans will only be able to access broadcasts at the Gaming Club's online poker room.

The Prima Network of Microgaming-powered online poker sites recently announced that it has added three new online poker rooms to its list of partner sites. Online poker fans in Scandinavia are getting a tournament all to themselves. "Chicago Sam" Petrillo, one of the top players from the early days of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), recently passed away in his Las Vegas home at the age of 68. In the years 1979 and 1981, Petrillo made it to the WSOP's final tables, and built a name for himself as one of the top professional poker players of his time. He has been accredited with being one of the figures who helped boost poker's popularity over the years.
