NBC's Poker Tournament Crowns Phil Hellmuth Champion
NBC's "made for TV" National Heads-Up Poker Championship crowned Phil Hellmuth the winner after the competition finally ended in the wee hours of Monday morning. The Texas Hold'em championship whittled the initial 64 players down to just two in the final table, pitting Hellmuth against Chris Ferguson. Following an intense game, Hellmuth finally emerged victorious after 3 a.m., potting the $500,000 first prize. The National Heads-Up Poker Championship featured a head-to-head format, with each round setting just one player against another. The competition included a number of poker legends, including Doyle Brunson, Howard Lederer, Johnny Chan, Erick Lindgren, Gus Hansen, Chris Moneymaker, Daniel Negreanu and Greg Raymer. The tournament was filmed by NBC at Las Vegas' Golden Nugget hotel-casino and is slated to air on the network for four consecutive Sundays in May.
